Hi, Patrick here, creator & developer of Mahjong Tayo! For the past four months, I’ve been working on creating a mobile game to fully capture the sensory, relaxing, and social experience of playing Filipino Mahjong. What started out as a fun idea quickly turned into a labor of love. The goal became more than just getting the gameplay & rules right… but to truly convey the feelings, locations, and culture of Filipino Mahjong.

All of the art is made by the amazing Xereina!!! From custom tile art that evokes the Philippine sights & folklore, to the mascot that takes inspiration from both the iconic 1-stick tile and the Maranao people’s Sarimanok, to the 20 incredibly relatable characters... Every detail is meant to be a celebration of the Philippines! If you’re Filipino, I would be shocked if you could not associate several of your family members and friends with the characters. The hope was to really spark those fond memories of where-and-who you’ve played with in-person.

There’s multiplayer, which was super interesting to learn how to do, and even more fun to test and play over and over again with my family. Set up a room and invite 1-3 friends/family. I also added online chat so the typical table trash talkers and table jokesters can spice up the game as they normally would.

There’s an entire story mode, which is meant to gradually introduce you to all the rules (for the beginners), as well as immerse you in the common shared experience of growing up around Mahjong as a Filipino.

And lastly, the thing I’m most proud of: the tactile experience of playing Mahjong is fully translated to the phone. From mixing the tiles, to stacking your tile wall, to arranging your hand, to drawing and turning over a tile… these are all details that are skipped or automated in every other Mahjong game I could find. But for me, these parts of playing Mahjong in-person are what purposefully slow it down and help you to be present at the table. Especially for beginners, if you skip this part of the game, then they’ll only learn the rules, but they’ll miss out on the rituals that make it Mahjong.

All of this mixed together is meant to form an experience that is inviting and exciting for Beginners, and at the same time familiar and satisfying to experienced Mahjongeros.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn Filipino Mahjong…

Or you want a great way to connect with your friends / family that love playing Mahjong…

Please give Mahjong Tayo! a try. 🀄️
